Issues of menstrual hygiene have led most girls to drop out of schools because most schools, who usually stay away from school during menstrual periods in fear of embarrassing themselves, because of poor or lack of girl friendly facilities. SOS children’s Villages Zambia has taken measures to promote good menstrual hygiene management (MHM) for all women and girls. More specifically help to break the silence and build awareness about the fundamental role that good menstrual hygiene plays in enabling women and girls to reach their full potential. Poor menstrual hygiene is caused by a lack of education on the issue, persisting taboos and stigma, limited access to hygienic menstrual products and poor sanitation infrastructure.
