Sweet Success: 560 Litres of Hope from Climate-Smart Beekeeping

In the heart of Nakasaka community, Mumbwa district, 30 determined young people are proving that innovation and resilience can transform lives. Operating as the Twikatane Youth Group, these youths have turned a simple idea into a thriving, climate-smart business that protects the environment while creating jobs.

In 2025, the group received Spark Funds from SOS Children’s Villages under the Youth Power Project, managed by the Lusaka Family Strengthening. Instead of waiting for opportunities, they created their own investing in 30 modern beehives, high-quality wax, and sugar to support their bees.

Beekeeping is more than just a business; it’s a climate-smart solution. It preserves biodiversity, requires no deforestation, and works in harmony with nature.

The results? Extraordinary. Out of 30 hives, 28 produced honey, yielding 560 litres of unprocessed honey in their first harvest. This milestone has officially placed the Twikatane Youth Group on the map as local business owners.

Before this project, many of us were sitting at home without jobs. Getting these beehives has changed everything. Seeing 560 litres of honey from our own hard work shows us that we can be successful business owners. We are not just earning an income—we are proud to run a business that protects our environment,” said the group Chairperson.

Beyond the numbers, the project has created direct employment for all 30 members, giving them steady income to support their families and lift themselves out of poverty.

Yet, success brings new challenges. The group now faces hurdles in marketing—finding reliable buyers who offer fair prices is their next big step. Securing sustainable markets will ensure this sweet success continues for years to come.

With 560 litres of honey harvested, the youth of Nakasaka have shown that with the right support, the next generation can drive both economic growth and climate action.
