SOS Children’s Village Kitwe is located in Copperbelt province, five kilometers from the city center in Zambia. Established to serve disadvantaged children and families, the village can house a maximum of 192 children in a total of sixteen family homes. There is an SOS mother in each of these, with SOS aunts providing additional supervision and care.
The village is composed of a multi-purpose hall, administration buildings, and residential accommodation for village and SOS aunts' director residence. There is an SOS Kindergarten with three group rooms, open to village and surrounding community children, with a specific focus on traumatised and learning disabled children.
Education is a high value placed, with a primary school run at SOS Hermann Gmeiner School for a maximum of 700 pupils. There is a computer room, laboratory, library, and room for metalwork, woodwork, and home economics, and 18 classrooms.
The SOS Social Centre in Kitwe helps at least 2,000 HIV/AIDS-stricken families with material care, overall medical care, and psychosocial care. The SOS Medical Centre treats at least 10,000 families annually, offering full medical care with a pharmacy, consultation rooms, labs, and observation and counselling rooms.
Since its founding, SOS Children’s Villages Kitwe has been a source of hope, offering care, education, and protection to children and families to allow them to thrive.
