"My parents did their best, but we couldn't afford my education. When SOS Children’s Villages in Zambia gave me eight goats, they gave me hope. I worked hard, grew my herd, paid for nursing school, and today I'm proud to serve my community by running its only pharmacy while I await my deployment as a nurse. I want every young person to know that one opportunity, matched with determination, can change a life—and an entire community."

More than 5 000 children have been cared for through the Alternative Care Programme. SOS Children’s Villages in South Africa enables children to grow in a caring family environment through 11 programmes across eight provinces around South Africa.

Children have rights and it is important for them to know their rights, to understand how they should be treated, and how they should treat others. This is why 93% of children in alternative care at SOS Children’s Villages in South Africa have received Child Protection Training.

When children know their rights, they become their own biggest proponents of their safety and well-being. This is critical because our communities are rampant with child neglect and child abuse. They also become their brothers and sisters keepers when they know where and to whom to report violations of their rights. Empowering them helps us in ensuring that we fulfil our mission of every child growing up in a loving home environment.
