SOS Children’s Villages Lusaka is one of the 4 Village locations of SOS Childrens Villages Zambia which is part of an international community of SOS Children’s Villages, with a purpose of offering care and protection to disadvantaged children and families. Established in 1999, it is located about six kilometers out of Lusaka city, off the Great North Road, in a 16-hectare property that was a present of the Zambian government.
The village forms a safe and supportive community for children who cannot live with their family. It consists of 15 family cottages with a capacity for 180 children and has a variety of amenities such as a kindergarten, a primary school, a secondary school, and a training school for vocational training. There is a youth unit for guiding youth towards independence.
In addition to residential care, SOS Children’s Village Lusaka works with communities to promote healthy and strong families and prevent abandonment of children. It extends material, medical care, and psychosocial care to HIV/AIDS-infected families. It organizes training in parenting and children’s rights and vocational training for parents to allow them to gain employment and become entrepreneurs.
